How to Package an 8" Subwoofer

This is going to be a brief video and a more detailed writeup on how to package a subwoofer for shipping.  I know a lot of us in the car audio world are always upgrading a trading gear so I think it is time to properly show how to package a speaker so the next person to get it doesn't get a box full of shrapnel. 

First you want to make sure that the box you select is the right size. I know it sounds dumb but if the box is too big you waste a lot of time and effort trying to fill the empty space. Conversely if the box is too small there will not be enough room inside for proper packaging and you risk damaging the sub. This writeup is specifically for smaller speakers like 8" and 10." When shipping larger speakers it is much more effective to build a frame out of wood that fits the inside dimensions of the box for rigidity.  Another thing to consider is expanding foam. You can wrap the speaker in a trash bag (make sure it is heavy duty) and fill the voids in the box with expanding foam. It is usually about $3 per can and can be found at any hardware store.  For the actual packing process you are going to want to put a few extra layers of cardboard in the bottom of the box under the magnet of the subwoofer. This will prevent the magnet from wearing through the box during transport. For smaller speakers like the one in the video packing peanuts are sufficient for filling the voids in the box. For my 8" sub I selected a box that was L:12" W:12" and H:10.5." I put 3 layers of cardboard in the bottom of each box and filled the rest with packing peanuts. When I say filled with peanuts I mean I packed them in there tight.
